Night Ninjas Founder – Alix Russo
The story of how Night Ninjas started…
My name is Alix. I’m a single mum of two beautiful boys and the Redlands has always been my home.
A few years back, we hit a point in our lives where we faced homelessness after a relationship breakdown. With the majority of my family being overseas, I was extremely grateful to friends who willingly took us in. We rotated between households so as not to overwhelm any particular friends. It was at this point I realised there was a big problem in the Redlands, with waiting lists for public housing getting ever longer, and services and programs for the homeless being cut due to government circumstances.
I thought to myself, surely I’m not the only one going through this, and began to dig deeper, setting up meetings and trying to get an idea of how many people were out there with nowhere to go. Once I had my answers and I got myself established in a small, private 2 bedroom unit, I began to ask on Facebook pages if they had seen anyone who needed my help. I wanted to find out where the hotspots were. Within 3 hours I had so many responses from people wanting to help me that I had to open my own Facebook page!
By day 3 we had nearly 400 members, and by the end of the week it reached over 1,000 (it’s up to 7,700 now), and thus Night Ninjas Inc was born.
I’m so grateful to everyone in our community for all their support in helping us help others. I’m truly humbled.
